The Janice L. Dobrovolsky DeBlance Memorial Fund
The Janice L. Dobrovolsky DeBlance Memorial Fund was established in February, 2012 to provide financial aid and scholarships to Aldine High School students. The purpose of the fund is to encourage and recognize students who demonstrate, through example and initiative, a desire to achieve a college education.
Jan was born May 16, 1961 in Wichita, KS to Nicholas and Arlean Dobrovolsky. She moved with her family to Bryan, TX in 1974 and attended Bryan High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Gymnastics Team, French Club and served as the yearbook editor during her senior year. She graduated BHS with honors in 1979.
Jan attended Sam Houston State University, in Huntsville, Texas and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1983. She began her teaching career as a general physical science teacher at Aldine Senior High School and served as an advisor to the yearbook staff, the Aldine Mustang cheerleaders and worked with the science club.
Jan achieved her Masters of Education from Sam Houston State University in 1996. She became assistant principal at Aldine Senior High School in October 1999. Her career then took her to the campus of Aldine Ninth Grade School where she served as principal until 2008, when she was promoted to the position of principal at Aldine Senior High School. As principal, Jan was able to revise and improve several school policies and develop a comprehensive dress code for which she was recognized nationally for her efforts and innovation.
Throughout her 29 years in the Aldine ISD, Jan enjoyed mentoring students and helping them succeed both in and out of the classroom. Her strong work ethic and determination were tools she used to encourage students to continue their education. She enjoyed attending athletic events, FFA activities and working with the Ladies of Distinction.
In October 2011, Jan was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. During her brief and hard-fought battle, her family, friends and students always remained her focus.
Janice DeBlance will be missed at Aldine Senior High School and Aldine ISD. The lives she touched and influenced are living tributes to her dedication. It is our hope that contributions to the Janice L. Dobrovolsky DeBlance Memorial Fund will help continue her legacy by providing financial support to students, as they become leaders and mentors to the next generation of young people, just as Jan did!
