a Foundation in Memory of Alexander Chase Block

Alex Block was a loving son, grandson, brother, and stepson.  He was a fiercely intelligent and compassionate person, defined by his enormous curiosity about the world, how it worked and his empathy for those in need.  Alex lost his struggle with an improperly diagnosed mental health issue, which led him down the path of self-treatment using a variety of substances.  Had Alex received a proper diagnosis and treatment he might be with us today.  

“Alex’s Unfinished Story” is dedicated to helping remove obstacles between those struggling with mental health and the appropriate help.  We cannot bring Alex back, but in his memory and his name we can work towards helping others in Alex’s circumstances to choose life.

Alex was my first born, my explorer, my adventurer.  December 28, 2017, will be forever etched in my memory. That morning I awoke to a text and a voice message from Alex that changed my life forever; he had lost his battle with mental illness and had died by suicide. He was 23 years old.

For the past four years, I have worked with The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) to elevate mental health education and to help others find the support that Alex didn’t. Years of seeking help mostly brought him misdiagnoses and ineffective treatments. Multiple psychiatrists gave Alex a primary diagnosis of substance abuse when in fact he was self-medicating to try and overcome a combination of mental health disorders.

Alex had tough times – his internal struggles sometimes made it seem like he was struggling with us. But he was always concerned, and frequently asked, “I am a good person, aren’t I?” And that he certainly was. I would give anything in the world for another five minutes on the phone with him, but I can’t get that, and so I am here today in his name, doing what I think he would want me to be doing on his behalf.

We are here to raise funds and continue Alex’s story in the hope that others can learn from his life, his successes, and his struggles. It is vital to make the conversation about mental health public, to shine a light on it, removing the shame and the stigma. It starts with helping people in need find the proper support. This is how we tell Alex’s story; this is how we act in his name and on his behalf to help people. I know that Alex is looking down and is proud of us, sharing his story and continuing the crusade for mental health and addiction.
