John Howard Adkins Memorial Scholarship

The John Howard Adkins Memorial Scholarship, established in 2015, honors the memory of John Adkins. He was the father of four daughters and multiple generations who adored him. He was tough, ornery, honest and loving. Although he never attended college, he challenged all his family to work hard, do their best at anything they tried and “use their head for something besides an ear spacer”. Through his encouragement, instillation of responsibility and strong work ethic, he inspired his family every day.

This scholarship is awarded annually to female students in support of their efforts to pursue an education in science, technology, math, or engineering. As a general guideline, recipients have demonstrated an understanding of excellence as a function of persistence and hard work.

Scholarship Details

Thank you for your interest in the John Howard Adkins Memorial Scholarship. In order to be eligible for this need-based scholarship, you must:

  1. Be graduating from high school in Spring 2021.
  2. Have averaged a minimum gpa of 3.5 during 9th – 12th grades.
  3. Be continuing your education in the academic year following high school graduation at a four year accredited university/college.
  4. Be a female planning a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) with a STEM major selected at the institution of choice.

All of the information requested on the application form is also required for eligibility. Academic achievement, personal accomplishments, financial need and response to the personal statement/essay question are all important factors in our choice of a scholarship recipient, but none of these factors alone can either guarantee or disqualify an applicant.

Scholarship Recipient Instructions (keep for your records)

Money will be awarded near the beginning of the 1st semester of the 1st year in college. If selected as a recipient of this scholarship, you will need to provide the following information to the scholarship administrators to receive your award funds. Please include the following with your application:

  1. Your name and student ID for the college where the funds are to go.
  2. University Name, Financial Aid Office contact’s Name and the address where the award money will be sent.

Scholarship recipient/s will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship which may only be used for tuition, required class books, and/or approved education fees.

Please note: All scholarship funds will be sent directly to the recipient’s college account. No scholarship funds will be given directly to the student. Family members/relatives of John Howard Adkins are NOT eligible for this scholarship.
