The Ken Gunn Memorial Fund
The Ken Gunn Memorial Fund was founded in 2021 and serves as a living tribute to Dr. Ken Gunn. Ken was a longtime principal, football coach and mentor to students, teachers, coaches and staff at Walnut High School. He was raised in Victorville, CA where his father was the high school football coach and principal. Ken went to UCLA (’60) and, while he loved Victorville Jackrabbit green, his devotion to the Mustangs and Bruins meant he bled blue and gold. At UCLA, Ken was a guard on the football team. In addition to lettering in football, Ken was captain of the rugby team and was later inducted into the UCLA Rugby Hall of Fame. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and The Kelps, a men’s spirit organization devoted almost exclusively to playing pranks on USC. After two years in Japan serving in the Navy, Ken started his career in education as a teacher and football coach at Nogales High School. In 1968 he was part of the original group of teachers and staff who opened Walnut High School. At WHS, Ken was a teacher, varsity football coach, athletic director, assistant principal and principal. In every role, he was always, at his core, a coach. He served as President of CIF Southern Section Council, President of the CIF Federated Council and was the inaugural Chairman of the CIF State Football Bowl Championship Games when they began in 2006. In retirement, Ken served as interim principal at Glendora High School and went back to his roots in football becoming an assistant coach of the WHS freshman football team. Ken was an inspiration to students, teachers, and administrators throughout California. Most importantly, Ken Gunn was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend.
To honor Ken, and his legacy of developing meaningful relationships and encouraging people to find passion in all they do, this fund will make annual gifts to people and programs that do the same. Distributions will be made to athletic programs and student-athletes who demonstrate high character, hard work and perseverance at Walnut High School and the high schools of his four grandsons (Glendora High School and Millbrook School)
