“Bridging the Gap”
About Bridging the Gap
There is an overwhelming and rising risk-factor facing the transgender community. Health and wholeness is truly a matter of life and death. Depression, isolation, and hopelessness are daily struggles and often life long. These issues are faced by every age group and ethnicity regardless of social class or economic standing. Only through education, awareness and community effort can we save lives and support those we love. Being true to who you are should never be the hardest life to live. It is our hope that the “ Tivey-Lewis Bridging the Gap Fund” will empower its recipients to follow their destiny, proudly pursue their dreams and inspire others to do the same.

Letter to the Applicants
I am honored and humbled to be a part of such an incredible opportunity to “pay forward” and encourage the future of tomorrow to live your life from the inside out, with integrity, honesty, hope, and gratitude. My dad never got to truly walk and live in her truth to her full capacity, and I can’t even imagine her reaction if she were alive today, knowing that there is a scholarship fund that has been created and inspired by her story. I only wish I could have just 5 minutes with her to share this incredible gift with her, just to see her face…. To let her know that I love her just the way she is, and that her journey to live her truth, although cut too short, will change and encourage the youth of today struggling with living theirs.
I hope this scholarship encourages you to do it anyway, and that we are all perfect, exactly the way we are. My dad’s life was cut short, and it wasn’t until after her death, that we learned how tortured she truly was. So much of our past and growing up under very tumultuous circumstances, was explained in my dad’s passing.. I will never have that opportunity to see her face again…to encourage her to press on, and that she’s perfect just the way she is…that it’s ok..
Don’t waste a second of living your life to reach your full potential. Only you, and you alone are responsible for your life. Life is unpredictable and filled with surprise. How you face challenge and adversity will result in struggle, or inner peace. Everything you do starts with what lies inside of you. Always be grateful, be present, forgive, and always remember to treat others better than they deserve. The sky is the limit!
Good Luck to all of you,
(Daughter of Chet Melvin Tivey)
