Art Dawg Scholarship Fund

Our Mission

This scholarship is dedicated to Lise Bense Frielinghaus and is for Westhampton Beach High School students that are pursuing a career in art and WHB Middle School students who will attend an accredited art academy or program.  Lise’s art reflected her whimsical nature and her life was dedicated to helping others discover their hidden artistic talent.

She was a relentless champion of the underdogs and the marginalized and believed that everyone could benefit from art.  She loved all animals, especially dogs, cats, birds and rabbits of which she cared for many in her lifetime.

Aspiring artists of all levels are encouraged to apply.  This scholarship will be selected based on merit, compassion and need.  Applicants should submit an application (including a short essay on how art inspires them) as well as a selection of their artwork.

About Lise

A proud local resident, Lise was a graduate of Westhampton Beach High School and a beloved art teacher at Westhampton Beach Middle School for 23 years, her third and most rewarding career.  A graduate of Syracuse University with a degree in Fine Arts and Illustration, Lise was a creative pillar in the community. She was recognized by her students as a generous, supportive, creative force, and her classroom was seen as a safe haven.

A prolific artist, Lise’s works adorn many Westhampton area buildings and homes. Residents surely recall Lise driving around town in her VW bug with its notable “ArtDawg” license plate, usually with one of her many dogs riding along. Her family remembers Lise as a kind, humorous, creative, and generous wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Her classroom and life were decorated with quotes that expressed her endlessly creative, thoughtful and compassionate view of life, including

“Be kinder than necessary”
“Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend, didn’t have a dog”
“Work for a World that is Harmonious, Just and Merciful”
“After God made dogs…he sat down and smiled”
“Saper Vedere – knowing how to see”
“And though she be little, she be fierce”
“You are braver than you believe and stronger than you seem and smarter than you think”

To embellish upon one of her favorites from Wicked,

“Because we knew her, we have been changed for the better. Because we knew her, we have been changed for good.”
