Cescily Johanna Wheeler Female Athletic Scholarship

The Cescily Johanna Wheeler Female Athletic Scholarship, was created to honor the memory of our beloved daughter, granddaughter, niece and cousin Cescily Johanna Wheeler.  Cescily Jo was and always will be a shining star to all of us.

About Cescily Johanna

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 10, 1998 and given the middle name of her maternal great grandmother.  From the moment she was born she (had a fiery spirit) was ready to live life.  It was a challenge to settle her down or get her to sleep; it was almost like she knew she had to get everything in, within her short life.

Cescily could swim, bike, talk, and laugh for hours.  She enjoyed swinging on swings, playing on the monkey bars endlessly, watching the NE Patriots win super bowls, Halloween, rides in the jeep with the top down while listening to country music, spending time with her dog PEAK and she never passed up an ice cream cone with ONLY rainbow sprinkles.

She had an incredible upbeat personality and always saw the glass half full.  Cescily liked fun, and one cousin said when you are around Cescily everything is more fun! She loved her family and looked forward to spending time with them around the holidays and on summer vacations; particularly on the St. Lawrence River and Skaneateles Lake.

Living in Bedford, NY she volunteered at local nursing homes, participated in many sport related fundraisers for local charities and beyond.  She enjoyed helping others and giving back.

Bedford, NY was where her passion for sports began.  Although these activities did not come easy to her she had the determination to do her best.  Her self-driven desire to excel had her up early mornings for swim team practices or weight room lifts; weekends filled with club swim meets; afternoon practices with varsity and club lacrosse practices to only come home and shoot on our barn wall and run her own practice drills until twilight.  Summers were filled with lacrosse and swim camps.  One teacher said Cescily has “GRIT” and he was right.  Cescily Jo did not mind the hard work and hours she put in, she enjoyed her sports and the feeling of being part of a team.  This hard work allowed her to become a starter on the Bedford High School Varsity Lacrosse Team as an Eighth Grade Student thus rewarding her with lettering for 5 seasons.

Moving to Newburyport, Massachusetts Ces was able to continue her passion for both sports.  On April 23, 2016 Dan Harrison wrote in Newburyport Daily News, “My favorite part about Wheeler is the praise she’s drawn from Batchelder for being an intense practice player who elevates the atmosphere and intensity every day for the entire Clipper team.”  Coach Batchelder saw Cescily’s work ethic and appreciated it.  This fired her up to continue to work hard playing two seasons for the Clippers.

Recognition of her work ethic (resolve) was awarded to Cescily.  Junior year….she was named The 2016 Daily News Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year, first team CAL all-star, at Newburyport High School she was named the team MVP, and Player of the Year at Newburyport High School after scoring 90 goals.  Senior season Ces was named first team CAL All Star once again, Newburyport Attacker of the year after scoring 70 goals,  collectively as a team she played to CAL Championships and North Championship titles.  In 2017 she was recognized by US Lacrosse Magazine for Player of the Week in 2017 representing the North East.

She also was recognized as an Academic All American three times.

In swimming as a senior on the Triton co-op team as noted by the Newburyport Daily News, Cescily “was one of the top performers in the pool for the Vikings, swimming consistently well in the 200 and 500 freestyle events … Earned Cape Ann League all-star status for her efforts in the pool this year … Among a season filled with competitive meets, two races stood out above the rest for the senior, including when her relay team qualified for states for the first time at home when everyone was ecstatic and cheering like crazy, and then at sectionals when she shaved about eight seconds off her 200 freestyle time and four seconds off of her 500 freestyle time … Had a personal best time of 2:08 in the 200 freestyle.”

After High School she went on to study and play D1 Women’s Lacrosse at George Washington University, from where she graduated in 2021.

Inspiration:

Cescily’s dedication and drive in her sport inspired us as her parents to recognize other high school female athletes with the same spirit.  This athlete does not need to be the top performer on the team, rather one with a great work ethic, a genuine heart and love for her sport/team, and above all True Grit.

We hope that this gives a snapshot into Cescily, and what her hard work and drive helped her accomplish within her high school sports career. This in turn helped her pursue her next step goals in college and beyond.  This special time in life is what this scholarship is looking to reward and memorialize. Ces was always happiest on the field and in the pool, and that joy is something we know she would love to pass along.

A $5000 scholarship will be awarded yearly.
