Andrew Tohulka Memorial Foundation

Andrew was a thoughtful, compassionate young man with an incredible sense of humor & intuition. He lived in & worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the greater Green Bay, WI area. In high school, Andrew struggled in the classroom but always worked hard & enjoyed the social aspect of school. After graduation, he knew that 2-4 years of college was not in his plan, but he wanted a job that gave him a sense of purpose. His mother, grandmother, & several aunts & cousins are nurses, & from them he learned about working in healthcare. He discovered that the nursing assistant training is a shorter college program, so he decided to enroll. He excelled in the program, earned his certification on the first try, & began his career in healthcare at an assisted living center where he worked full time for the rest of his life. Being a CNA gave Andrew a sense of purpose, pride, & a rewarding paycheck. While talking to Andrew’s patients & colleagues it became clear he had found his calling. His death was truly a loss not only to his family & friends, but to his patients & the local community as well. So many of Andrew’s friends have shared stories with us about how he always put others first & made himself available to them at all hours. This is the embodiment of a true nurse & had Andrew lived, his care & support would have continued to grow & spread to countless others. The Andrew Tohulka Memorial Foundation was established to honor Andrew’s legacy by awarding semi-annual scholarships to eligible youth for CNA training & offering ongoing employment readiness support. By promoting careers in caregiving, we also hope to increase the number of workers filling these critical roles in our healthcare system.
