The Baby Matty Memorial Fund

The Story

The Baby Matty Memorial Fund, established in 2020, is a tribute to the son of Matt and Julia Wiener. The couple welcomed Matty into their lives in May 2020. Due to labor complications, Matty was diagnosed with Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), which is a long term that means “a loss of oxygen to one’s brain, usually during the time of birth.” After spending 50 emotionally exhausting days in the neonatal intensive care unit, Matt and Julia brought Baby Matty home under hospice care to be with his loving family. During this time, Matt and Julia were moored by their team of night nurses and a strong support system that allowed them to embrace the delicate amount of time that they were able to spend with Baby Matty. However challenging, his 11.5 weeks of life had a profound impact on the family and all who loved him and became a driving force behind their initiative to begin the Baby Matty Memorial Fund, to help other families in similar circumstances.

The Goal

The fund aims to provide families facing perinatal and pediatric challenges with financial assistance for night nursing staff. Many of these cases require care beyond what is covered by common insurance plans; the Baby Matty Memorial Fund is dedicated to providing financial support to cover these gaps in care. Matt and Julia believe that all parents should be able to make decisions for their families and their health without being deprived of sleep, concerned with providing food for their families, or struggling to care for themselves and other children in the household. The Baby Matty Memorial Fund will compassionately lift the financial burden of families in need of night nurses by providing support during perinatal and pediatric acute or palliative care so that they can relish the sweet moments with their infant.
