Be Like Mitch Memorial Fund

Welcome to the Be Like Mitch Memorial Fund, established in 2023 to honor the life of Mitchell Ian Casper, our family’s brilliant and inspiring son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, whose passion for giving and being of service to others put principle into practice, improving the lives of people in his circle and in his community.

About Mitchell

Mitchell was a remarkable young man who in addition to his family, positively touched many lives as a teacher, coach, friend and mentor. Mitch embodied the values of honesty, integrity, compassion, charity, and fairness to others. He was an incredible force, and a rock that everyone could count on. He inspired all who knew him with his personality, drive and his willingness to help others. Mitch had a passion for learning, sports and music, along with a terrific sense of humor that could cheer up even the most sad. Witty and sarcastically funny  was his specialty, while always respectful.

Mitch attended the Boys Latin School of Maryland, graduating in 2016. While there, he was high school class president from 2012-2015, Student Body Treasurer 2016, Member on the Honor Board 2012-2016, Chair of the Honor Board 2016, Varsity Basketball Manager 2013-2016, Varsity Lacrosse Manager 2016, Varsity Volleyball Manager 2012-2013, Varsity Tennis 2015, Varsity Letterman, Williams Scholar, Yearbook Editor, Mock Trial Team and Student Prefect. He also ran the Cystic Fibrosis Club and One Love Club. Mitch went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Mitch pursued a career in education and was hired as a high school history teacher and basketball coach at Virginia Episcopal School (VES), in Lynchburg, Virginia in July of 2022. He loved the students, his JV basketball players and the VES faculty. He talked often about how grateful he was that the VES community welcomed him so warmly, and also about how he was so happy to be in such a wonderful environment and in a place where he could make an immediate impact with students.

Be Like Mitch!

Mitch lived by 10 of his own additional commandments. His dream was that he could instill in everyone to do the same, and Be Like Mitch!

1. Be honest. Always.
2. Be responsible.
3. Be caring, using a soft voice.
4. Be respectful of others, and yourself.
5. Be considerate.
6. Be compassionate.
7. Love thy neighbor, no matter their background.
8. Try and help the next person.
9. Be loving.
10. Enjoy life with laughter and with a sense of humor

Sadly, we lost Mitch due to a medical complication related to his Type 1 diabetes. He will be forever missed but never forgotten.

Our Mission

The Be Like Mitch Memorial Fund aims to support students and teachers who exemplify good values. These funds can help alleviate some of the financial burden of educational costs such as tuition, fees, expenses and supplies. Furthermore, the Fund may also extend its support to school athletic and/or music departments, to help foster a well-rounded educational experience for students.
