Shawn Perine Memorial Fund

Shawn Perine was the editorial director of Men’s Fitness, Muscle&Fitness, FLEX, and Muscle & Fitness Hers magazines.

The Shawn Perine Memorial Fund commemorates the life, work, and message of Shawn Perine, editorial director of Muscle&Fitness and Men’s Fitness magazines. Shawn wanted to help people build better bodies and live healthier lifestyles, empowering them to not only feel better about themselves but to ultimately become more active and altruistic members of their communities.

Here’s where your money will go:

Conservation International (CI). For nearly 30 years, CI has worked to support more than 1,200 protected areas and interventions in 77 different countries, ultimately safeguarding 601 million hectares of land, water, and coastline. By educating governments and corporations to enact policies that respect and preserve the environment, CI is literally saving the world for generations to come. Shawn Perine was a lifelong conservationist, and spent his last few years a devout vegetarian to help cut down on the pollution associated with factory farming practices. In lieu of flowers at his memorial service, Shawn’s family requested that attendees donate to CI.

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. Shawn Perine had a soft spot for all animals, but particularly gorillas, and Fossey has worked for more than 50 years to protect their habitats. As a result, mountain gorillas are the only ape population that is actually growing! Beyond helping the gorillas alone, Fossey supports the communities that exist around them through programs that aim to address basic needs. Research shows that when populations in developing nations have these needs met—including greater access to nutritious food, clean water, and healthcare—they turn their attention to conservation.

After-School All-Stars (ASAS). More than 15 million school-age children are on their own after the day’s final bell rings, and the hours between three and six p.m. are the peak time for juvenile crime and experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and sex. Shawn Perine discovered weight training in his teen years, and it changed his life forever. He wanted kids to have the same epiphany he had, and so does Arnold Schwarzenegger. The two worked together to promote ASAS, and it remains The Governator’s favorite charity. It has served 73,706 low-income, at-risk youth in 19 major cities across the country, providing after-school programs that keep kids off the streets by involving them in safe, constructive activities.
