The Cara Jade Dorris Writing Scholarship

Cara Jade Dorris died tragically on October 14, 2022 after being struck by a hit and run driver. A graduate of Brown University, Cara was an author, poet, teacher, and world traveler. Cara lived her life with a sense of adventure and exploration. Cara loved the outdoors and all animals. As a child she worked tirelessly at the Glastonbury, CT Audubon Society. In high school, Cara was a nationally ranked runner and a member of the 2008 Glastonbury Cross Country Team -winners of the New England Championship. She played First Trumpet in numerous bands including the CT All-State Symphonic band and excelled on the debate team. At a very young age, Cara exhibited her gifts as a writer. In high school, Cara’s poetry won prizes and appeared in nationally known publications. At Brown University, Cara was an opinion writer for The Brown Daily Herald. Excerpts from her many articles continue to appear nationally and internationally. Her writing has been published in The Jerusalem Post, The Hartford Courant, and The New York Times.

Scholarship Guidelines

Distributions are awarded annually to an exceptional High school student who demonstrates extraordinary writing skills emulating Cara’s competitive spirit and passion for life. As a general guideline, recipients demonstrate exceptional talent in the writing of poetry, memoirs, short-stories, personal narratives, essays, plays and screenplays. GPA minimum of 3.5 preferred.
